The Republican-led Congress is embroiled in internal strife over the shutdown and subsequent fallout from Senate Majority Leader John Thune's decision to leave out immigration enforcement funding out of a deal with Democrats to reopen the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the House GOP's revolt over this deal has strained party unity. This comes as Republicans are running Washington during the longest-ever shutdown of DHS, while their unifier, President Donald Trump, is focused on a Middle East war. Despite several meetings between Thune and House Republicans, there are still deep divisions between the two GOP leaders and their conferences, raising questions about whether Republicans can end the shutdown. The two Republican-controlled chambers are deadlocked in two-week recess, with both hesitant to return from their time away from Washington without a clear solution that can make it to President Trump's desk.
