The president accused the spiritual head of the Catholic Church of being "WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy". He also stated that he does not want a Pope who criticizes the President of the United States for his stance on crime and nuclear weapons. Despite being elected as the first American-born Roman pontiff less than a year earlier, he has largely avoided mentioning Trump when discussing global issues or responding to news from his home country.
