The State Patrol has confirmed that an unlicensed driver of an SUV caused a highway collision in southern Minnesota that killed five people, including four passengers on a converted transit van. The collision occurred on March 20 on Hwy. 71 near 240th Street in Cottonwood County, southern Minnesota. The State Patrol identified the dead as Richard Warren Johnson, wife Kathleen Ann Johnson, and their daughters, Kelly Christine Hargus, 49, and Lindsey Kay Rossow, 47, of Lakefield. The driver of the northbound SUV, Martin Nickolas Hanson, 67, of Springfield, Minn., also died. Initial findings suggest that Hanson was not licensed to drive in Minnesota or any other state. The crash is the deadliest in Minnesota since June 2023 when five young women were killed by an SUV driven by 30-year-old Derrick Thompson.
