Oscar-nominated producer Poh Si Teng has directed her directorial debut, the American Doctor, which is now screening at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen. The film follows the loss of life in Gaza to tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians since October 2023 under Israeli bombardment, invasion, and blockade. Teng expressed her despair over the death toll of journalists in Gaza, some of whom she knew from her time as a documentary commissioner for Al Jazeera English. She used her life savings of $150,000 to finance the production, which required a team including Kirstine Barfod, and Ema Ryan Yamazaki. The documentary, which focuses on three U.S. physicians who volunteered in Gaza from different backgrounds, was financed by Teng's life savings and donations of nearly $200,000.
