The Wake County school board has decided to abandon a proposal that would have eliminated 130 positions in the special education department, allowing more than 100 special education teachers to stay their jobs. The proposal, discussed during a special meeting, would have saved the district more than $10 million in the next school year. District leaders warned that without changes, the Wake County Public School System could face a nearly $18 million budget shortfall in special education funding. Concerns were raised about the future of the budget cuts, with teachers and parents expressing a lack of trust in state leaders. The district currently spends roughly $305 million per year on special education.
