BAFTAs N-Word Broadcast Ruled a ‘Clear Breach’ of BBC Editorial Standards, but Was ‘Not Intentional’

The BBC's executive complaints unit (ECU) has ruled that the airing of the n-word in its broadcast of the BAFTA Film awards breached the network's editorial standards. The incident occurred during the 2026 awards ceremony, when John Davidson, the inspiration for the film "I Swear," made an involuntary outburst while presenting the first award. The ECU found that the inclusion of the word was highly offensive and had no editorial justification. However, it also stated that the breach was unintentional.
