The United States and Israel have declared a five-day pause on military strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure after the U.S. and Israeli attack against Iran enters its fourth week. Former Gen. Jim Mattis, President Donald Trump's former secretary of Defense, stated that ending the war would essentially cede control of the Strait of Hormuz to Tehran. This comes as Iran's retaliation has resulted in the closure of the narrow passage, where 20 percent of the world's oil and seaborne gas supplies move from the Middle East to the wider market. Despite the pause, it is unlikely that the United States or Iran will be able to find a compromise for a solution, according to Mattis. Oil prices have fallen to $90 a barrel after the announcement of the five day pause on attacks against Iran to pursue negotiations.
