The University of Iowa Scanlan Center for School Mental Health, a clinic and resource center offering eating disorder services to Iowa school districts and their families, has seen a surge in interest. The center, established in June 2021 and housed in the UI College of Education, offers both virtual and in-person services such as counseling, child psychiatry, evaluations, professional development and more. It also provides individual therapy available with clinicians specializing in eating disorders and a list of other care providers in the state. All clients begin with a diagnostic evaluation and if they receive a diagnosis, the center will recommend an appropriate level of care for treatment. However, schools cannot request an eating disorder evaluation itself, and the center then contacts the parent. The increase in interest could be attributed to the increase in awareness of eating disorders in general.
