A judge has set a date for a hearing to determine if Kevin A. Schmidt, accused of murdering his parents in 2025, will be declared fit to stand trial. After refusing to come to court for months, Schmidt appeared before Circuit Court Judge Philip Montgomery. His defense attorney, Public Defender Chip Criswell, stated that Schmidt met with a health professional on March 31 and a report is expected to be ready for an April 29 hearing. If convicted, Schmidt faces a life sentence. He has been held in custody without release at the DeKalb County Jail in Sycamore since his arrest on Sept. 30.
