‘We’ve got to have accountability’: Sen. Murray says ICE reform is needed before DHS funding passes
Published on March 12, 2026.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown is currently in its fourth week, meaning employees have been without pay for a month. The longer TSA officers work without pay during the partial shutdown, the more likely they will miss work as they take on second jobs to cover expenses such as gas, child care, and other bills. However, Alabama Republican Senator Katie Britt and her fellow Democrats blocked this attempt by funding the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the Coast Guard, but not U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Washington Democratic Senator Patty Murray has called for reforms within ICE before the agency receives funding. The TSA and Homeland Security have consistently blamed Democrats for long security lines, which have been reported at airports across the country. The Airlines for America trade group has urged Congress to end the shutdown.
