Alaska has been a major destination for refugees fleeing war and persecution for decades, with an average of over 450 new arrivals between 2022 and 2024 largely due to Ukrainians fleeing war. However, the Trump administration's dismantling of the United States refugee resettlement program has resulted in a decrease in new arrivals, with only a handful of Afrikaners from South Africa. The changes have led to disruption for providers of support to refugees and uncertainty for those already here. All of Alaska's most recent refugee arrivals are from South African. Refugees and new arrivals who came to Alaska under humanitarian programs are also facing major changes, with over 1,000 Ukrainians living without clear legal status and without an employment authorization.
