The Boston City Council may issue a rare subpoena to Police Commissioner Michael Cox to testify on the department's protocols for releasing body camera footage after a fatal police-involved shooting led to a manslaughter charge. The Council's request was filed after Boston Police leadership did not accept the body's invitation to testify at a hearing regarding the department’s release policies. The public interest in viewing the footage is stated that it is essential to understand the circumstances surrounding incidents involving the use of deadly force. However, Councilors Miniard Culpepper and Brian Worrell argue that releasing the footage would violate BPD rules regarding the release of public or Council records requests. If approved, the mayor has a week to respond.
