As a Michigan voter, I am concerned by the increasing rhetoric and erratic decisions by President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement. These actions, which include suggesting that an entire American political party is the nation's enemy, are seen as a direct threat to both our wallets and democracy. The SAVE Act, which requires "documentary proof of citizenship" to register, is a solution in search of a problem and is seen as an attempt to reduce voter participation in the 2026 mid-term elections for Republicans. The proposal would impact seniors who have voted for decades and use their birth certificates, marriage licenses, etc. to prove their citizenship status. The bill also suggests that 30 states currently allow mail voting without a reason to provide voters who have been provided without reason to vote on election day.
