Doulas can improve health outcomes for women and babies, particularly in the care of women of color, according to studies by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. This year, UnitedHealthcare became the first major insurer to add a doula benefit to plans across the country, with all employer-sponsored plans set to receive access by next year. The company's CEO, Margaret-Mary Wilson, believes that doulas can help improve health care outcomes for pregnant women and children, especially for women of colour. Over the past 13 years, at least 26 states have begun requiring Medicaid coverage for doulas, and four states require private plans to do so. The number of preventable pregnancy-related deaths, particularly for women who are pregnant or with mental health issues, is at a critical point.
