The European Commission is preparing to tell Google how it must open Android to rival AI assistants under the Digital Markets Act. This decision will determine whether artificial intelligence becomes the next platform lock-in or the first to be broken before it sets. The Commission argues that Google, which controls around 65% of Europe's mobile operating system market, cannot be the sole arbiter of which AI gets to talk to the phone. The draft findings are part of specification proceedings opened under the DMA in January, and arrive at the same time as Google is completing Gemini’s takeover of the Android assistant experience for over two billion devices worldwide. Google has expressed concern that these measures could compromise user privacy, security, and innovation. A public consultation on these measures is set until 1 May. The final decision on both the issue is expected by 27 July 2026.
