Microplastics are invisible pollution that infuses the air in our homes with hundreds of thousands to millions of microplastics each year, according to a study by biogeochemist Jeroen Sonke and his colleagues from the French National Center for Scientific Research. The majority of our exposure to microplastic occurs when we're indoors, with an individual in the US potentially inhaling up to 22 million micro- and nanoplastics per year. Depending on the type of synthetic materials used in your home, where you live, how much synthetic material is in the home, and how you clean and ventilate your space. There are several simple changes to reduce this exposure, including reconsidering the clothes and furnishings we buy, or changing the way we wash and clean our houses. However, there are still challenges in measuring microplastastic levels, as there is no standard approach for measuring micropolastics.
