NASA plans to build a permanent base on the moon by 2032, following the success of Artemis 2, the first crewed mission to the moon since 1972. The agency's next mission, Artemis 3, will stay in Earth orbit to test Orion's ability to dock with one or both of the program's crewed lunar landers. If all goes well, Artemis 4 will then put astronauts down near the moon's south pole in late 2028. The remaining crewed Artemis missions will continue to teach NASA the skills and techniques it needs to make the next step. However, there are still significant hurdles to overcome, including a helium leak during Artemis 2's mission.
