The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Indiana Department of Environmental Management are conducting a review of Gary's Lake Sandy Jo landfill superfund site for the seventh five-year superfund review. The review is expected to be completed by July 6. The site, which operated as a landfill from 1971 to 1980, was added to the National Priorities List in 1983 and most cleanup was completed in 1994. The EPA's cleanup included capping the landfill with clean soil and planting prairie grasses, extending the municipal water supply to residents and conducting long-term groundwater monitoring. Brenda Scott-Henry, Gary’s director of sustainability and environmental affairs, said the site will be clean enough to create development at the property.
