The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued its first batch of licences for fiat-backed stablecoins, marking a significant step towards developing regulated digital currencies in the world. The licenses were granted to HSBC and a joint venture by Standard Chartered, under the city's new policy which came into effect in 2025.
