The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada has petitioned the state Supreme Court to review the legality of a pact between Las Vegas police and federal immigration authorities at the Clark County Detention Center. The Metropolitan Police Department has been sending all foreign-born people it books at the jail to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which reviews their immigration status. The 287 (g) program allows trained jail staff to process ICE warrants and hold inmates ICE wants to pick up for up to 48 additional hours after they're scheduled to be released on their local cases. A district court judge dismissed the ACLU lawsuit last month, stating the ACLU lacked standing. The ACLU argues that the issues raised in the case are likely to continue affecting people in Nevada and should not be dismissed without review. Since the new deal went into effect in mid-December, ICE has taken custody of at least 240 inmates.
