Austin council member calls AG probe "political grandstanding," says city follows law

Austin city leaders and the Austin Police Association are responding to concerns raised by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton about a recent policy change involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) warrants. Austin City Council Member Mike Siegel, who represents District 7, called this "political grandstanding" and stated that the city is following the requirements of the 2017 version of Senate Bill 4, which outlines how local law enforcement agencies comply with ICE. The attorney general's office has also requested the data used to justify the policy, including all data on interactions between APD and ICE in the last two years and each six months following the effective date of the order.
