Professor at Boston University, James Bessen, has argued that the roles of software developers are not near extinction due to the increasing number of entry-level software development jobs and predictions of applications entirely AI-generated. He argued that AI is taking over software development tasks and boosting productivity and output, but this is not translating into lost jobs. Despite this, Bessen noted that software developer jobs have continued to grow, reaching record levels of employment. The number of software development in the US has grown by over 400,000, or 19%, since ChatGPT was introduced in 2022. Bessen also noted that the productivity uptick developers are seeing may be a boost to their professional opportunities.
