Prostate cancer remains a major health concern for men in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, according to state data. The profile from the Ohio Department of Health covers 2018 through 2022 shows that thousands of cancer cases are diagnosed annually in the county each year, with prostate cancer ranking as the leading cancer diagnosis. Despite accounting for the highest share of cancer incidence at 14.8%, the disease only accounted for about 5.8% of countywide deaths. The county saw an average of over 8,000 new invasive cancer cases annually across all cancer types, and at least 165 died from the disease. Early detection and routine screening is a crucial strategy for survival, with 77% of prostate cancer cases detected early between 2018 and 2022 compared to 69% statewide. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends that Black men begin screening at age 40, while the American Cancer Society suggests starting around 45.
