The Powerhouse Gagosian Gallery, known for its network of around 20 galleries worldwide, faced the prospect of having to relocate from its New York headquarters to 980 Madison Avenue, where it had been at the top of the building since the late '80s. The gallery relocated from the building's top floors down to the street level, where the gallery previously had a shop and small shows. The new space, which opened in the late 1980s, features a 12,000-square-foot complex with offices, meeting rooms, and private viewing areas spread across two floors. The restaurant Kappo Masa and Japanese chef Masa Takayama remain on the lower level, while the new ground-level gallery is more accessible and open and accessible. The opening shows include works by Marcel Duchamp and Robert Rauschenberg.
