New studies by U.K. non-profit anti-fraud organization Cifas and U.S. law firm Outten & Golden LLP suggest that workplace misconduct is increasing globally, with a quarter of respondents considering moonlighting for a direct competitor to their main employer as ethically acceptable. The survey also revealed that 24 percent of respondents had knowledge of colleagues committing expense fraud and 13 percent knew someone who had sold company login details. The findings suggest a shift in workplace norms and raise urgent questions about organizational culture, risk management, and accountability. Fama's analysis of customer vetting found that nearly 7 percent of all postulants had posted online content or content reflecting aggressive or reckless behavior. The company also highlighted the potential for increased screening of potentially dishonest candidates before they're hired. Both companies argue that businesses need to establish reporting systems that effectively address acts of fraud and misconduct and protect anonymous employees who call them out.
