Northwestern University students at the university have seen significant changes in their Muslim student experience during Ramadan, specifically during this period when students are fasting from dawn to dusk. Free meals are provided for students who do not already have an active meal plan, and a free meals program allows them to use their dining cards twice daily for iftar and take-out food for suhoor. This is particularly beneficial for upper class students who are not required to participate in a meal program. The university spends the cost of the program for the month, and as of Feb. 25, 250 students had signed up for the program. Student advocate Jannah Issa, executive board member for the campus’ Muslim-cultural Student Association, has been advocating for more support for Muslim students during Ramadan since her freshman year and sees this advocacy paying off.
