Colorado Springs man sentenced for deadly hit-and-run, using child as human shield

Dominic Rodriguez, a Colorado Springs man accused of killing 28-year-old Patrick McCarthy in a hit-and-run, has been sentenced to eight years in the Department of Corrections (DOC), plus three years of mandatory parole for leaving the scene of the crash. He also received six years in DOC for a second-degree kidnapping charge. The sentences will run concurrently. Police say when they tracked down Rodriguez, he used a small child as a human shield to avoid arrest. The judge called Rodriguez's actions "beyond the worst mistake you can make," and warned that he poses a threat to the community.
