Expected to plead guilty to a string of cold-case murders, including the murder of an eighth victim, Karen Vergata, in Suffolk County court, according to law enforcement sources. The alleged guilty plea ends one of the most notorious serial murder cases in the New York metro area in recent decades. Heuermann, a 62-year-old architect from Massapequa Park, is charged with murdering seven sex workers between 1993 and 2010, including four women known as the Gilgo Four. The murders were unsolved for years before their reopening in 2023. The maximum sentence on a second-degree murder conviction in New York State is 25 years to life.
