The Circular Economy isn't about being green anymore anymore, according to author RSC Sustainability. Only 10 percent of the 158 million metric tons of chemicals produced annually are recycled, representing a gap between the current and regulatory exposure. The EU’s circular Economy Act, expected in 2026, will create mandatory sustainability obligations at the material level. California's SB 54 requires all regulated packaging to be recyclable or compostable by 2032, with plastic use declining 25% and recycling rates reaching 65%. Meanwhile, extended Producer Responsibility programs in seven U.S. states make manufacturers financially responsible for post-consumer packaging. Compliance determines whether you can sell into major markets, not whether you feel good about sustainability. Chemical recycling capacity is growing at annual rates exceeding 25 percent, transforming from alternative technology to essential infrastructure. The technology that changed the game is pyrolysis, gasification, depolymerization, and solvent-based processing now produces virgin-quality materials from complex waste streams that mechanical recycling couldn't handle. Companies implementing circular strategies report efficiency improvements, new market opportunities, and competitive advantages. However, companies waiting for regulatory clarity before investing in circular capabilities have this backward step.
