UCLA football players displayed significant promise in spring practices, with new coach Bob Chesney leading the team to an immediate resurgence. The Bruins' performance was seen as a significant turnaround under Chesney, who was involved in the most minute details of each practice throughout the spring. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who is already a big-time player, showed potential to improve his game and improved his understanding of the run game under offensive coordinator Dean Kennedy. The defense showed an ability to disrupt players beyond edge rushers Sahir West and Scott Taylor, while linebacker Sammy Omosigho and defensive lineman Lucien Holland were standout performers in the spring game. The season opener at California is set to begin on Sept. 5.
