A recent increase in coyote sightings at a Lane County park has led to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODW) to euthanize one. Since January, sightings at Howard Buford Recreation Area at Mount Pisgah have increased, with the animals increasingly following people and appearing less afraid of humans. The Oregon Department for Wildlife examined coyote scat from the park to find man-made pet food and evidence of coyotes eating food from garbage cans improperly secured or disposed of. The only confirmed case of a person killed by coyotes in U.S. history was in 1981. To prevent someone from getting hurt, Lane County Parks, ODFW and wildlife management professionals have decided to kill habituated coyotes.
