The UK military is planning to spend £95m upgrading Britain's air defence radar network in an effort to prevent interference from offshore wind farms. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero confirmed that new radar technology would be in place by 2029, paving the way for up to 10GW of offshore wind developments across the coastline. The MoD has previously objected to wind farm projects due to concerns that turbines can cloud Britain's radar defences and make it harder for the Royal Air Force to identify potential threats. The new radars will enable the Royal RAF to monitor for potential attacks from adversaries and help the Armed Forces protect the UK. The Government also announced a consultation to block the construction of onshore wind farms within 15km of the Eskdalemuir array, while easing planning restrictions between 15km and 50km.
