The Oregon Employment Department has compiled a report showing wide disparities in income based on geography, with Deschutes County earning more than $87,000 per capita, $16,000 more than the state average. Malheur County had the lowest per-capita income, earning about $44,000 a year. The report suggests that high incomes are due to higher wages and higher investments. However, the report also reveals that the poorest counties rely heavily on government subsidies and are more dependent on government payments. The findings suggest that age demographics may be a factor, as Oregon is the oldest state in the West and counties with older populations have more retirees.
