The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) super PAC, United Democracy Project, funded two groups that spent more than $14 million in key House Democratic primaries in Illinois. The United Democratic Party (UDP) also contributed $5.3 million to support Chicago Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin in her unsuccessful campaign for the 7th Congressional District. The three super PACs accounted for 60% of all outside spending in Illinois House primaries this year. While progressive groups had accused AIPAC of being behind the spending, these direct ties were confirmed after voters went to the polls. This incident marks a new chapter in the ongoing debate over Israel policy within the Democratic Party over the issue.
