New York artist Tschabalala Self will commemorate the New Museum's expansion with a 13-foot-tall sculpture, Art Lovers, marking the exact point where the original building meets its new counter-part. The sculpture, which is partially based on Self's silk, satin, and dyed canvas collage Madly, features a Black couple in an emotional embrace. Self, who graduated with an MFA in printing and painting from Yale, has been a prominent artist globally and has hosted talks at the museum and contributed to its public programs and publications. The New Museum’s artistic director, Massimiliano Gioni, described the sculpture as a sculpture about New York and about art.
