The city of Ann Arbor, Michigan, has removed its Neighborhood Watch signs due to accusations of being racist. The City Council passed a resolution in December ordering the removal of over 600 signs across the city. The resolution claimed that Neighborhood Watch programs were rooted in assumptions about who did and did not “belong’ in a neighborhood, reinforcing race-based hyper-vigilance and suspicion towards black, brown, and other marginalized residents and visitors. The cost of removing the signs was estimated to be at least $18,000. Some social media users have criticized the claim that public safety efforts are racist.
