A major winter storm, expected to move across the Upper Midwest, could become one of the region's most significant on record, potentially dropping up to 16 inches of snow on the Twin Cities metro and up to 20 inches in other parts of Minnesota. A winter storm warning is in effect for much of central and southeastern Minnesota, including the Twin City, Morris, Alexandria, St. Cloud, Red Wing, Mankato and Albert Lea. The storm is expected to strengthen as it moves from the Rockies into the Plains and Great Lakes, interacting with an advancing surge of Arctic air. The biggest concern is heavy snowfall, with winds increasing to 35 to 45 mph on Sunday creating periods of blizzard conditions across western and southern Minnesota. Travel disruptions are expected to occur late Saturday and Sunday, potentially leading to travel disruptions and school closures.
