NYC public schools get lousy grade on protecting student privacy

A new audit by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli has found that New York City public schools lack comprehensive student data privacy policies. The auditors found that the school system does not have written policies on risk assessment or data backups, nor keep a full list of all applications used by local schools. Over a quarter of school employees skip annual cybersecurity trainings, and if a breach occurs, local education officials may fail to report or notify families in a timely manner. The audit was issued amid growing resistance to artificial intelligence in public schools, with schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels providing initial guidance on AI in the classroom.
