Blue Governors Are Tacking Rightward on Fossil Fuels

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and New York Governor Kathy Hochul, and Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont have all embraced natural gas, following years of focus on renewable energy to secure energy supplies and meet zero-emissions goals set for 2050. This shift from Republican Governor Charlie Baker to Democrat Maura Shealey, who signed a law directing Massachusetts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, has been seen as a shift in Healey's stance towards pro-pipeline policies from Democrats. Lamont's executive order in 2021 stated that man-made greenhouse gas emissions are causing climate change and suggested a new plan to identify the best clean, affordable and resilient heating and cooling options for buildings. Meanwhile, New York and Connecticut have allowed plans to expand the Williams NESE pipeline through New York Harbor and onto Long Island after it failed to gain required approvals from state environmental regulators.
