A new state-required emissions test will be required for gasoline vehicles between two and 24 years old and will take less than nine minutes to complete. The test is done by certified technicians who connect the computer to the Department of Motor Vehicles system and send the pass or fail results directly to the state. The new law will take effect in November 2026. Some drivers with older vehicles may struggle to pass the test, and the cost of repairing them may be prohibited.
