Brian Grazer, a 26-year-old producer at Disney, nearly lost his dream movie, "Splash" to Ray Stark's rival mermaid movie in 1983. Despite a strong interest from several major studios, Grazher was offered a 5 percent of the first-dollar gross if Disney would kill Splash. Disney declined this offer, but Splash became a hit in 1984 and made Tom Hanks a movie star overnight. The film also invented the Touchstone label, opened a release window, and gave the English language a new girl’s name: Madison.
