The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has been reported at rates at least double those of comparable public transit systems, according to a Tribune analysis of federal data. This comes as the Trump administration accuses the CTA of doing too little to address violent crime on mass transit. The most recent year with complete data, 2024, showed passenger assaults at a rate up to five times higher than those of other mass transit systems. The analysis also found that CTA workers were assaulted more frequently than workers at peer agencies. The Federal Transit Administration threatened to withhold $50 million in federal funding from the agency in December, but later backed down the threat. Critics have accused the Illinois Department of Transportation of failing to protect transit passengers and workers in Chicago. The CTA's safety figures have been troubling for years, before and after the pandemic.
