A husband and wife escaped from a locked memory-care unit in 2020 in Tennessee, using Morse code to the keypad that controls the exit door. The keypad was giving the code away, but the man managed to use it himself. The incident occurred when a resident realized the code was giving away. The couple were picked up two blocks away and returned to the facility unharmed. The facility changed all memory-Care exit codes and staff were re-trained to check doors following the incident. However, six years later, there are still significant technical questions about the technical implementation of the system. Since the incident, the Elmcroft in 2020 has changed its regulatory landscape and is working with the Tennessee Department of Health Care Facilities to create the Office of Health Facilities for compliance with federal regulations.
