West Nile detected in dead crow found in North Park
Published on March 12, 2026.
A dead crow found in North Park has tested positive for West Nile virus, marking the first detection of the virus in San Diego County this year. The virus can be transmitted to humans when certain types of mosquitoes feed on an infected bird and then bite them. The county's Vector Control is increasing surveillance and treating mosquito breeding sources, including monitoring around 1,600 potential breeding sites and applying larvicide by air, boat, truck and hand crews. The public is urged to dispose of standing water or remove items that can hold water.
