Scientists from Kyungpook National University in Korea have discovered a new species of chiton, a marine mollusk that clings to rocks and feeds on algae. The discovery was made through genetic analysis of several Acanthochitona species off the southern and western coasts of South Korea. The new species joins the 940 known species that have barely changed over the last 300 million years. With over 1,300 species known so far, more of these species are still alive than extinct. The study was published in Marine Life Science & Technology. The findings could provide valuable data for future molecular investigations into the species.
