The South Suburban Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, a long-serving addiction recovery home in East Hazel Crest, had its operating licenses revoked by the Illinois Department of Human Services late last year. All licenses authorized by the department were null and void as of Dec. 27. The department did not provide specific reasons for the revocation. The council did not respond to requests for comment and a phone number listed on its website appeared to have been disconnected. The loss of the licenses represents a significant blow to the organization, with former board president David Walano describing it as "a giant albatross". Patients were transferred to other facilities in September.
