New York City is introducing thousands of giant curbside trash containers, known as "Empire Bins," across all five boroughs with a plan to convert over 6,500 parking spaces to accommodate them. The move, announced by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, is a major step towards full citywide containerization, which officials say could be completed by 2031. The bins live in the street, accessed by building managers and emptied by specialized side-loading trucks. The program aims to modernize sanitation and improve street cleanliness. However, the city will have to sacrifice thousands of parking spaces for the containers, which could result in a competitive parking situation.
