‘Not political’ Mableton mayor explains city’s ICE detention center moratorium

The Mableton City Council unanimously passed a moratorium on the development of federal immigration detention centers. This decision was made in response to concerns over local economic and safety impacts. Mableon Mayor Michael Owens stated that the moratorium was proactive and aims to ensure that a potential facility is not built in his city. The moratorium will remain in place until Dec. 31, 2028. In response to these concerns, an ICE spokeswoman previously stated they were unfounded and that bringing detention centers to Social Circle and Oakwood will bring jobs and economic benefits.
