President Trump and his allies argue that the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner (WHCD) proves the need for a secure White House ballroom. Since 1968, the dinner has been held at the Washington Hilton, a hotel complex north of the House, but suspect Cole Thomas Allen was able to sneak weapons there. The White House believes a secure ballroom facility is needed at the House. The president's bid to build a 90,000 square-foot ballroom, larger than the actual White House itself, has been stalled by litigation, particularly from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Some lawmakers, including Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-Mo.) and Rep. Lauren Boebert (R), have proposed legislation giving the project the goahead.
