The House of Representatives has experienced a sudden surge of accountability, with accusations of sexual assault and other misconduct occurring simultaneously. Former Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) and Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) may not have faced scrutiny if he was not running for governor. Other members of Congress have threatened censure or expulsion, but have countered these threats with retaliatory votes. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigned after not defending herself during the House Ethics Committee's investigation, despite being under federal indictment for embezzling campaign funds and not offering a plausible denial of the charges. Critics have also expressed disappointment that the ethics committee hasn't moved quickly on Rep. Cory Mills (R) who was questioned about domestic violence and was hit with a protective order over a separate alleged domestic violence incident.
